Some Random Things...

  • Check out this video from jtv about eco-fashion. It has a lot of shots from the exhibition I was in at uni (though they never bother to mention it or explain what it was about), and I'm even in it at some point, sounding like a bogan and saying that I'm not likely pay more for an organic t-shirt. Haha! I swear, they asked me way more questions which I answered intelligently and didn't sound like I hate the environment. Oh well. I did like that my garment was featured in the first intro part.
  • I saw 'Coco Avant Chanel' the other day and really enjoyed it. The clothes were nice and I really liked the casting. I knew going into it that it was 'Coco before Chanel' but I was hoping for a bit more about how she started the business! Oh well.
  • I also saw 'The Hangover' and 'Year One'. My recommendations: see The Hangover, don't see Year One.
  • I've been doing lots of skiing over the last couple of weeks. This makes me happy. I also realised that as of next season, I'll have been skiing for 20 years.
  • Ha! I'd also like to clarify that despite what I look like in this photo, I was a very skinny child!

  • Also, I have to say I've thoroughly enjoyed watching nothing but Michael Jackson videos instead of the real news. I think any kid who ever did dancing will always have a soft spot for Michael Jackson. I actually went to a Michael Jackson concert when I was nine, kind of by mistake. We'd just moved to Brunei the day before, and found out that MJ was doing a special free New Years Eve concert and that everyone was going! So off we went. I was jetlagged and tired and to be honest, didn't know much about him (I was from a small town, we didn't have the internet!). All I can really remember is him arriving in a silver space ship, but I'm glad I can say I went! There's even a wikipedia article about it.
  • TheMogg Blogg is really funny. They make fun of ugly interior design, which is something I like to do too. There was an awkward moment when I came across this and thought "hey, that's actually awesome!". Turns out it's from Kanye West's house.

  • Speaking of interior design, the Etsy blog did a video feature on Francesca from The Snail and the Cyclops' home which is pretty cute. See it here. I thought "Hey, that's a cool video, I wonder if there's more like that?". Turns out there is, and I quickly realised that most crafters are also collectors. ARGH! I've always been terrified of becoming a collector. They have scary houses. See?

Here's to you, Mrs Robinson

I had my presentation for my Men's Collection subject yesterday. It's the assessment I've been worried most about all semester, so I'm glad it's over and it actually went pretty well! This is my final look:

We were each given a menswear designer to pretend we worked for - mine was Band of Outsiders. I'm really glad I got them, I hadn't heard of them before the project but I really like their aesthetic and they have a great womenswear line too. For the actual collection, I used the movie "The Graduate" as inspiration.

Fashion Week

So, being a lowly student, I don't have a lot to do with fashion week, but this year I did manage to get to a few things!
The first was the opening of the Fashion Craft: Fashion Technology exhibition on Tuesday night. The exhibition is being held by my uni and features work by yours truly! Our project was sponsored by Rip Curl, who provided us with neoprene off-cuts and old wetsuits, which we all had to turn into fantastic avant-garde garments. I think we all did pretty well, and the exhibition looks great. The opening was a pretty good night, too!

The theme was 'Exo-skeleton' and my design was inspired by scale armour... with a bit of 60s influence thrown in, as I tend to do with everything!

On Wednesday I went down to Circular Quay to see the TV show (I'm still yet to find a way to phrase that without people thinking I went to a television studio!). I loved the digital prints and the use of laser-cut fabric.

Next up on Thursday was the Sara Phillips show - this was my favourite of the shows I went to. Her grey jersey pieces were all really great and I liked the beige & black stuff too. There were LOTS of pieces in her collection that I would want to wear.

After the Sara Phillips show, I decided to see if I could get into the next show without a ticket - turns out the bouncer was more concerned of ridding me of my glass bottle (Perrier, what a poser!), and so I got to enjoy the Gary Bigeni show! It was about 95% draped jersey, but he did it well and I liked the colour palette. It's hard to see it in the photos, but I really loved the models' hair - unusual as I'm usually not a hair & make-up person, I tend to just look at the clothes!

I really want that purple jacket.

Wow, this post ended up being really long! oh well.

I Can't Explain...

...why I had two weeks holiday and still didn't get around to updating my blog. Oops. Anyways, a few weeks ago I went to The Who!! This is pretty much the greatest thing that could ever happen, partly because The Who are my all-time favourite band, and partly because, let's be honest, it's kind of a miracle that they're still touring!

Picture 2
Roger at the Sydney concert on 31/3/09

The show was incredible, they played for two and a half hours without a break and played everything I wanted them to play and MORE! Also, Counting Crows were the supporting act and I'm now a big fan of them too. I went with my Dad as I got the tickets for his Christmas/Birthday present and we had really great seats, so all in all it was a good night.
I was very happy to see Roger Daltrey's style hasn't changed much (pictured above), although he did lose the vest and scarf pretty much after the first song and I think the shirt was fully unbuttoned by the end of the night. Must get hot up there!

Picture 4
Pete at the Sydney concert - note the head-sweat towel - if he wasn't so talented, I'd be disgusted by that...

To end this post, allow me to post my favourite photos of Pete & Roger in their younger years...

I'm on Easter holidays! Woo! So who knows, I might finally have some time for this. I have a few posts planned but right now I'm gonna do some tags that I got AGES ago, better late than never, right?

R. (am I allowed to call you by your name yet, seeing you mentioned it on your blog?) Tagged me to do "Four things":

Four Places I Go Over And Over
Uni
Rosalina's (favourite restaurant!)
Canberra (my parents live there)
My local supermarket. Obviously these lists are in no particular order, I probably go to the supermarket more often than I go to Canberra!

Four People Who E-mail Me Regularly
My silly friends - we created a Gmail group over 3 years ago now and just keep replying to the same email (currently titled "WOO!") over and over again so we have these ridiculously long chains of emails...
My mum when she's bored at work
St George telling me when I get money or pay rent
Teachers from uni telling us when to go and what to bring and how much money to pay etc etc

Four Favourite Smells
Gardenias!
Italian food cooking
My mum's Chicken Wings cooking
Chocolate cake cooking

Four Places I'd Rather Be Right Now
Berlin! lounging around in Tiergarten
New York
London
Somewhere pretty and Autumn-y... It's starting to get cooler in Sydney but the trees haven't turned and it just doesn't feel like Autumn...

Four TV Shows I Watch
I don't have a tv so I just watch these shows online:
The Office (US)
Gossip Girl
Ugly Betty
and Gilmore Girls on DVD.

Amanda & Steps both tagged me to share Ten Things about myself. I'm never very good at thinking up these kinds of things so instead I'm going to list ten movies that I like. In no particular order:

1. Dirty Dancing

2. Strictly Ballroom

3. Phantom of the Opera

4. Quadrophenia

5. Across the Universe

6. Love Actually

7. Looking for Alibrandi

8. The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert

9. My Girl

10. Clueless

Finally, Tilli tagged me to answer this quiz thingy...

What is your current obsession?
Antique/Secondhand furniture shops
What are you wearing now?
Pyjamas
. Hey I'm on holidays!

Do you nap a lot?
If I have a big headache I'll take some Panadol, drink some water and go to bed for about an hour... most of the time I wake up fresh as a daisy! Miracle Cure that sleep is!

What is on your desk?
Not much, it's a fall front desk (see here) so it has to have nothing on it to close. But above the desk are glass-fronted bookshelves filled with art supplies.

What would you like to learn to do?
Speak German fluently.

What’s for dinner?
I have no idea... noodles or pasta or something.

What was the last thing you bought?
I went economy-stimulating the other day with my free money and I bought those Converse All Star lights I've been wanting (black leather) and a cardigan and a top. I went grocery shopping last night but that's a bit boring.

What is your favorite weather?
I like really cold, clear days when the sun is out and the air feels 'crisp'!

What is on your bedside table?
A silver hand mirror with my name engraved on the back, a little green china bowl to put my jewellery in, a box of tissues and a bottle of water, probably.

What’s your style?
Hmm a bit retro, a bit schoolgirl-y, lots of brightly coloured short skirts and dresses - I wear jeans sometimes but rarely any other form of pantalooooooon... I like things to fit close to the body and be happy-looking. I hate wearing too much black.

What is your most challenging goal right now?
I guess keeping a Distinction average at Uni... this year is SO much harder than the last two so I'm not sure if it'll happen...

If you could have a house totally paid for, fully furnished anywhere in the world, where do you want it to be?
There's a lot of places I want to live someday, but if it's going to be fully paid for, I guess I'd want it in New York or London as they're the most expensive!

What would you like to have in your hands right now?
A puppy! A little black and tan dachshund puppy...

What would you like to get rid of?
All these bloody cables around my computer/printer/sound system kinda area. Everything should be wireless. Oh and racism and violence and stuff.

What languages can you speak?
English, Indonesian/Malay (though I've forgotten SO much), bits of German! and little bits of lots of others, I love languages!

What language(s) do you want to be able to speak?
Getting fluent at the ones I sort of know would be a start... and also that African one with the clicks. How do they do that?

What do you want to be when you grow up?
A costume designer for theatre. Over-the-top musicals would be my specialty.

What's one thing you're looking forward to?
The two things I've been looking forward to all year (going to The Who and my cousin's wedding) just happened last week so, now it would probably be going home next week and having some quality shopping, eating and movie-watching time with my parents!

Favourite memory of the last week?
Aww The Who was over a week ago now so my cousin's wedding last Friday! and going on the rollercoasters at Sea World on Saturday!

What websites you visit constantly during the day? Sydney Morning Herald homepage, Gmail, Twitter, Travelpunk, Google Reader, Frankie Forum. In that order!

This is my stop...

09.03.21daria
This is a very rare photo of me not smiling... or at least trying not to! hence the weird face...

I went to a cartoon character themed birthday party on the weekend. Now, I love a good costume party, so I usually go all out and make something new and amazing for each one - ideas for this party included Jane Jetson, Betty Rubble, Wilma Flintstone, Belle from Beauty & the Beast, Cinderella or Smurfette. Minnie Mouse also crossed my mind, but I've already been Minnie for a lot of parties and I wanted to do something different. Unfortunately, I had A LOT of uni work to do this weekend, so I had no time to make something (or go out and buy fabrics... nor did I have any money to do that!). So, I had to find a character whose outfit I already had...
Picture 7
DARIA! I don't know why I didn't think of her first (well, it was probably because I was only thinking of characters who wear pretty dresses)!

The blazer was my first ever good vintage find when I was about 15, the t-shirt was from an op shop and the dress (you can only see the skirt part) is from Crossroads. The boots are RMK and the geeky glasses (have I ever mentioned here that I really hate the whole 'geek glasses' trend?) were a Secret Santa present last year. They had some crazy lenses I couldn't see through, so I tried popping them out but ended up breaking the frames in 3 places, which explains the extra-geeky sticky tape holding them together.

DSC08586

A big highlight of the night was getting there and meeting a girl (named Ali, too!) dressed as Daria's best friend Jane. Also, seeing the birthday girl run around all night in a home made Gumby costume. Good times!

Who wants cheap shoes?

boots

I put a whole bunch of shoes and stuff on Ebay this week... Everything starts at 99 cents, which is ridiculously cheap, so make sure you take a look and see if there's anything you want! The shoes all fit about a size 7 or 8 (except the little boots above which are about a 6/7). I'm trying to get rid of all the shoes I never wear, so most of these shoes are in really good condition as they've just been taking up space in my cupboard most of the time!

Quick Question...

But first, hi! I started back at uni and have made all sorts of goals that are going very well... which means that I've actually been spending a lot of time doing homework and not a lot of time on the internet. Go me! I had to make a post though, because I have a very important decision to make...

I want new converse. Which pair should I spend my free money on?
The cool new All Star Light, which I've had my eye on for awhile?
Or the totally awesome special edition 'The Who' All Stars featuring Pete Townshend?

Decisions decisions....

Note: I feel the need to clarify that I don't actually consider this to be a 'very important' decision! I'm being shallow and materialistic because Kevin wants me to!
